Note from the Author:
This book has darker tones than my previous works and
contains mentions and flashbacks of physical and emotional
abuse as well as violence. Reader’s discretion is advised.I shut the front door and leaned against it with my eyes closed.
My cheeks hurt, sore from keeping a fake smile in place.
Pretending everything was fine had become a full-time job, not
just for me but for my mates and found family.
My job to gather more candles took longer than expected and I
ran into far too many people asking how I was doing.
“Hey, you’re home.” Tracker’s footsteps sounded down the
stairs, and I sighed into his chest as his arms wrapped around
me. “Long day?”“Always,” I whispered, lifting onto my toes to kiss him before he
stepped back. I groaned at the separations.
He studied me for a moment, then extended his hand. “I want
to say it won’t always be like this, but––”“But no one can guarantee that.” I tried to offer him a smile,
but those muscles had given up. “Hopefully, it will get better.”Soon.
Something had to give. The tension between the Yukon pack
and Sterling Bay communities was at an all-time high.
Technically, we were one group, but neither side wanted to
accept it. This was why Masie, Ryan, and Rainer asked us to
be positive examples and show the others this was for the best.
Hence the ever-present smile I glued on my face in public.
“No news?” It was my daily question, not that my mates would
wait until I was home to tell me if they had any updates.
“No.”
I stepped out of my muddy boots. The melting snow was
turning the area into a mess. Apparently, this was the beginning
of spring, but I wasn’t ready to believe winter was really over.
The heavy gray clouds felt too ominous, like the moment we
got comfortable, they’d let down a fresh layer of snow. It
seemed too good to be true that I’d survived my first Alaskan
winter.
Maybe it was a little messed up, but, in the month since
Tawnya and her son, Warren’s, betrayal, I’d almost begun
wishing we’d hear something.
